The Africa Cup of Nations will take place during the summer from 2019, moving from its usual timeframe of January and February.
The move was announced by governing body the Confederation of African Football (CAF), which also confirmed that the tournament is being expanded from 16 to 24 teams.
CAF's executive committee rubberstamped the changes during a meeting in the Moroccan capital of Rabat.
Other measures including allowing teams from other continents to take part in, and even host, the Africa Cup of Nations were rejected.
The Africa Cup of Nations will continue to be held every two years, and is next due to take place in Cameroon in 2019.
