UEFA opens disciplinary proceedings against Aberdeen, Apollon Limassol

UEFA opens disciplinary proceedings against Aberdeen and Apollon Limassol following crowd trouble during their Europa League tie on Thursday, August 3.

UEFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against Aberdeen and Apollon Limassol following crowd trouble during their Europa League tie.

The Scottish Premiership side lost Thursday's third qualifying round second leg 2-0 in Cyprus, exiting the competition 3-2 on aggregate.

Riot police were forced to intervene in the away section in Larnaca as Aberdeen fans clashed with stewards after the defeat.

The Dons have been hit with two disciplinary charges for "crowd disturbances" and "no stewards travelling with supporters", the latter being a breach of UEFA's safety and security regulations.

Apollon, meanwhile, face three charges of "setting off fireworks", "throwing objects" and "improper conduct of team".

Flares were thrown from the home section early in the second half, landing close to Aberdeen goalkeeper Joe Lewis in his own goal, while referee Stephan Klossner threatened to abandon the game if the behaviour of the fans did not improve.

UEFA's disciplinary body will deal with the case on August 17.
