ITV commissions Fash, a new drama about footballer brothers John Fashanu and Justin Fashanu.

ITV has ordered a new drama about footballing siblings John Fashanu and Justin Fashanu.

In 1990, Justin became the first male professional footballer in the UK to come out as gay - but in a tragic twist, eight years later he committed suicide, having been ostracised by his family including brother John.

Fash promises to be a "unflinching, vital and deeply-provoking" account of the brothers' lives and has been written by Kwame Kwei-Armah in conjunction with John and LGBT activist Peter Tatchell.

"Much has been said and written about the relationship Justin and I shared over the years, but drama of this type has an ability to delve right to the beating heart and truth of events in a way other media can't," John said in a statement. "I feel privileged to play a part in bringing it to the screen."

Tatchell added: "This is a powerful, moving life story that needs to be told. I am very honoured to act as a consultant to the production team, based on my friendship with Justin Fashanu in the 1980s."

Fash is expected to premiere on ITV1 in 2023.
