BBC confirms changes to Politics Live, BBC Parliament

The BBC confirms upcoming changes to its Politics Live programme and the BBC Parliament channel.

The BBC has confirmed that Politics Live is to be cut from five days a week to four from the autumn as part of ongoing cost-cutting measures.

The daily show - chiefly fronted by Jo Coburn - is currently on air just once a week for PMQs due to the coronavirus crisis but there had been speculation that it could be axed entirely.

The Friday edition will be cut when the show returns following the summer recess, although there is no word yet on whether Andrew Neil will be back on the series.

BBC Parliament will drop almost all of its original commissions to focus on live and pre-recorded coverage of parliamentary proceedings, in addition to daily and weekly highlights programmes.

Reruns of the BBC's coverage of previous general elections will continue to feature in the schedule from time to time, and Media Mole understands that the Sunday afternoon simulcast of C-SPAN's Washington Journal will continue.

BBC News is also planning structural changes across its operation, deploying reporters and correspondents across multiple programmes in order to cut down on duplication.

Meanwhile, the corporation has reaffirmed its commitment to keep the BBC News channel and the BBC World News channel as separate entities although the two services will continue to simulcast certain programmes.
