Rafael van der Vaart set for darts debut

Former Holland midfielder hung up his boots in November is now focusing on a new sports career.
PA | 4d

Former Real Madrid and Holland midfielder Rafael Van Der Vaart will make his first appearance in a British Darts Organisation ranked tournament this weekend.

The 36-year-old, who retired from football in November after also playing for the likes of Ajax, Hamburg and Tottenham, announced his intention to forge a career in darts last month.

The BDO has now announced Van Der Vaart will make his debut in the Denmark Open and Denmark Masters in Esbjerg, where he ended his playing career.

Van Der Vaart, who played 109 times for his country, will take on Thomas Andersen in the Open and former World Cup runner-up Per Laursen in the Masters.

Van Der Vaart's brother Fernando is also among the field for both tournaments.
