Cricket Australia has banned captain Steve Smith and vice-captain David Warner for 12 months for their part in the ball-tampering controversy against South Africa.

Batsman Cameron Bancroft has also been suspended for nine months, as the fallout from the incident in last week's third Test against South Africa in Cape Town rumbles on.

The trio had initially been banned from the Aussies' final Test, with further punishment to follow once the incident had been looked into after footage emerged of Bancroft tampering with the ball.

Cricket Australia has acted swiftly by handing out sanctions to Smith, Warner and Bancroft, although all three cricketers can still challenge their verdicts and the length of the bans.

Smith was replaced as captain of Indian Premier League franchise Rajasthan Royals on Monday, while Warner relinquished his role as skipper of Sunrisers Hyderabad less than 24 hours later.
