David Warner has been included in Australia's 17-player squad for the upcoming Ashes series with England.

The 36-year-old's place at the top of the order was deemed to be at risk due to his recent poor form and historical indifferent displays during away Ashes series.

However, the veteran has been given the chance to compete for his place in the starting XI when the showdown with their fierce rivals gets underway in June.

Of the players that recently toured India, Ashton Agar, Peter Handscomb, Mitchell Swepson and Matt Kuhnemann have all missed out on a place in the group.

Despite a number of poor knocks on the subcontinent, Matt Renshaw remains as an option to open, while the uncapped Josh Inglis will provide wicket-keeping cover for Alex Carey.

Todd Murphy, the 22-year-old spin bowler, keeps his place in the squad as backup to Nathan Lyon, while Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Scott Boland are the only frontline pacemen at this stage.

While Australia boast a 17-strong squad for the Ashes, that must first be reduced by two for the World Test Championship final versus India, which will be staged at the Oval on June 7.

Squad in full: Pat Cummins (c), Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Marcus Harris, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Todd Murphy, Matthew Renshaw, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, David Warner body check tags ::
