Kenya's Ferdinand Omanyala and Jamaica's Elaine Thompson-Herah took the 100m gold medals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on Wednesday night, and there was a bronze for Daryll Neita of England.

Omanyala - the reigning African champion - flew out of the blocks at the start of the race and finished with 10.02 seconds on the clock to finish at the top of the pile.

There was only 0.01 seconds separating South Africa's reigning champion Akani Simbine and Sri Lanka's Yupun Abeykoon in second and third place, with the former clinching the silver by the finest of margins.

Wales's Jeremiah Azu placed fifth with 10.19 seconds, but England's Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake was off the pace right from the start and ended in eighth with 11.10 on the board.

Meanwhile, Jamaica's Thompson-Herah - the fastest woman alive - dominated the field with a time of 10.95 to claim the gold medal in her 100m event, although she was forced to play catch-up against Julien Alfred of St Lucia at the start.

Alfred ultimately won silver with a time of 11.01, and Neita - despite getting off to a dissatisfactory start - recovered to cross the line in 11.07 seconds and win bronze for England. body check tags ::
