Kyle Edmund has failed to join his four British compatriots in the third round at Wimbledon after losing in straight sets to Gael Monfils.

On Wednesday, Andy Murray, Johanna Konta, Aljaz Bedene and Heather Watson all progressed through to the last 32 at SW19, and Edmund had the opportunity to join that group in his clash on Centre Court with Monfils.

However, despite matching the Frenchman for long periods of the match, his opponent's greater experience proved crucial as he came through by a 7-6 6-4 6-4 scoreline.

Both players wasted break-point chances in the opener before Monfils took the tie-break 7-1, and Monfils was able to outlast Edmund in the second as he struck twice on the British number two's serve.

Edmund stormed into a 3-0 advantage in the third but as the temperature in London hit 31°C, he began to tire and Monfils was able to wrap up a fairly convincing victory.

Monfils will now move on to face the winner of the match between Yuichi Sugita and Adrian Mannarino.
