Hubert Hurkacz will look to win his second ATP tour title of the year when he faces Pablo Carreno-Busta in the final of the Canadian Open in Montreal.

The Spaniard, meanwhile, is aiming to win his first title of 2022 and his first tournament victory on a hard court since 2019.

Match preview

Hurkacz was only ever won one ATP Masters 1000 tournament, which came in Miami on the hard court last year, but he has the chance to claim another significant tournament victory at the Canadian Open on Sunday.

The Polish player has reached two semi-finals on the hard court this year - in Dubai and Miami - but he has managed to book himself a place in the final this week.

He has had to fight his way through the rounds the hard way, with all four of his matches in Montreal going the distance, coming from a set down in two of those encounters.

Included in his run to the final was a quarter-final victory over this year's Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios and semi-final win against world number seven Casper Ruud despite losing the first set.

The world number 10 will look to draw inspiration from his only title win this year after winning his first tournament on grass at Halle.

A victory on Sunday would see Hurkacz win an outdoor hard-court tournament for the fourth time in his career, and he will be confident of doing so having never lost an ATP tour final.

Meanwhile, Pablo Carreno-Busta is looking to win his first ATP 1000 event after enjoying a successful week in Montreal.

The world number 23 cruised through to the semi-final stage without dropping a set, and after beating one British player in Jack Draper in the quarter-final, he managed to find a way past another in the semi-final, beating Dan Evans over three sets.

Although he dropped one set against Evans, Carreno-Busta will enter the final in a confident mood, with his run to Sunday's showpiece including a 6-3 6-2 first-round victory over 2021 Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini and a 6-2 6-4 win over world number 12 Jannik Sinner in the quarter-finals.

Carreno-Busta now has the chance to win his first title of the year after losing his only other final appearance of 2022 in Barcelona on the clay court.

The Spaniard does have five ATP final defeats on his record, but he has also won six tournaments on the tour, with his most recent victory coming in Hamburg in July 2021.

A win over Hurkacz on Sunday evening would also see Carreno-Busta win his first event on a hard court since winning the tournament in Chengdu three years ago.

Head To Head

Szczecin challenger(2015) - Round 16: Carreno-Busta def. Hurkacz 3-6 6-4 6-3
Cincinnati (2021) - Round of 16: Carreno-Busta def. Hurkacz 7-6[6] 7-6[3]
Metz (2021) - Final: Hurkacz def. Carreno-Busta 7-6[2] 6-3

We say: Hubert Hurkacz in three sets

Carreno-Busta has claimed two wins over Hurkacz, with those victories taking place on clay and hard courts, while the Polish player won the last meeting between the pair indoors.

However, the win in Metz took place in a final, which will give Hurkacz confidence ahead of Sunday's match.

With Hurkacz higher in the ATP rankings and unbeaten in finals on the main tour, we expect him to beat Pablo Carreno-Busta for the second time in a tournament final.
