British duo Katie Boulter and Heather Watson both suffered first-round exits in the women's singles at the 2022 Indian Wells Masters.

Both players were forced to go down the qualifying route to reach round one, and Watson was swiftly knocked out by the Czech Republic's Tereza Martincova 2-6 1-6.

Boulter took the court later on Thursday against world number 44 Jasmine Paolini and was comfortably dispatched 3-6 2-6 by the Italian, missing out on a reunion with Wimbledon opponent Aryna Sabalenka in the process.

On a brighter note, compatriot Harriet Dart booked her place in the second round after Croatia's Ana Konjuh was forced to retire in the second set at 3-1 down, with the Brit storming to a first-set 6-1 win.

Dart has been rewarded with a second-round clash against former world number three Elina Svitolina, while Emma Raducanu kicks off her bid for Indian Wells glory against Caroline Garcia of France on Friday.

GB are also represented by two players in the men's first round, as Liam Broady takes on Miomir Kecmanovic and Andy Murray seeks revenge on Japan's Taro Daniel after losing to the 29-year-old at the Australian Open earlier this year. body check tags ::
