Great Britain's Dan Evans stunned Karen Khachanov to advance to the quarter-finals of the Barcelona Open, but Cameron Norrie's run ended at the hands of Lorenzo Musetti.

Evans made it four wins from four against Russian sixth seed Khachanov with a 6-3 6-4 triumph in one hour and 28 minutes, but Musetti came from behind to defeat Norrie 3-6 6-4 6-1 earlier in the day.

Based on their head-to-head record, Evans evidently had Khachanov's number, and the Briton capitalised on an error-strewn showing from the world number 11 to maintain his 100% win rate against him.

Evans broke to love in the sixth game of the contest and came through two nervy holds to take the opening set, having to beat away two break points for Khachanov in each of his final two service games.

The Russian's uphill climb became even steeper when he was broken in the opening game of the second set - he saved one break point with an ace before Evans took control and held for a 2-0 lead.

Frustration soon began to take over for Khachanov, who smashed his racquet onto the clay twice before gifting his broken piece of equipment to a young spectator, and he only brought up one break point for the remainder of the match, which Evans saved in the eighth game.

Khachanov held in the ninth to delay the inevitable, as strong play from Evans at the net sealed a second ATP Tour quarter-final of the year for the world number 26, who reached the semi-finals in Marrakech earlier this month.

Evans will not be joined in the last eight by Norrie, though, as the British number one suffered a painful collapse against Italy's Musetti in a two-hour defeat.

The duo traded breaks in the third and fourth games of the match before Norrie broke again in the sixth, and he took the match by the scruff of the neck with successive love holds to take the first set.

However, having missed three chances to break Musetti's serve in a tightly-fought second set - including two at 40-15 in the ninth game - Norrie was broken himself in the 10th as his 21-year-old counterpart forced a third set.

Musetti, who defeated Novak Djokovic in the Monte Carlo Masters earlier this month, proved too hot to handle in the third set, breaking Norrie to love in the second game and racing into a 3-0 lead.

The exhausted Briton could not respond and was subsequently broken for a fourth time to bow out in the last 16, as Musetti set up an all-Italian quarter-final with Jannik Sinner.

Meanwhile, Evans will face either Casper Ruud or Francisco Cerundolo for a spot in the semis, where he could meet world number two Carlos Alcaraz. body check tags ::
