Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho: 'Tax fraud case is closed'

Jose Mourinho hopes to move on from the long-running Spanish tax fraud case relating to his time at Real Madrid, having apparently agreed to pay a settlement.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has said that the Spanish tax fraud case relating to his time in charge of Real Madrid is now "closed".

The 54-year-old appeared at the Court of First Instance and Instruction in the Pozuelo de Alarcon district of Madrid on Friday morning, quizzed over charges of a €3.3m (£2.94) tax fraud.

Mourinho arrived at 8.30am local time and left soon after, having apparently paid a fee to settle the accusations relating to undeclared image rights revenue.

Speaking to reporters outside the court building, he said: "I was told that my tax situation was completely legal. I was told that my tax situation was completely legal.

"A few years later I was told that there was an investigation opened and they told me that to regularise my situation I had to pay sum X. I did not answer, I did not argue, I have paid and signed with the state that I am definitely in compliance and the case is closed. That is why I am here, nothing else."

Prosecutors accused Mourinho of using companies in New Zealand, Ireland and the British Virgin Islands to hide image rights income in 2011 and 2012.
