Tiger Woods has revealed that he will not be participating in next week's US Open in Brookline.

After a car incident in February last year, the 15-time major winner was left facing a battle to save his career, the initial relief coming from avoiding an amputation to a severely broken right leg.

However, the 46-year-old surprised the world of golf by making his first professional appearance in 14 months at the Masters in April, the Augusta course regarded as one of the toughest to walk on the calendar.

The legendary American followed that outing by playing at last month's US PGA Championship, Southern Hills also representing a punishing 18 holes for a player in Woods's condition.

After the third round and being joint-last in the tournament, Woods made the decision to withdraw having been in obvious discomfort for much of the week.

Less than a month on from that tournament, the former world number one has opted against playing at the US Open, which takes place in Massachusetts next week.

When addressing the media over the past six weeks, Woods has frequently alluded to his desire to compete at the 150th Open Championship in July.

The competition, which Woods has won on three occasions, is being held at St Andrew's in Scotland, a course which Woods has often described as his favourite.

Woods's announcement comes on the same day that Dustin Johnson - a two-time major winner - pledged his allegiance to the Saudi Arabia-backed LIV Golf International Series by resigning from the PGA Tour.
