Paris Saint-Germain sporting director Leonardo remains hopeful that the club can tie Kylian Mbappe down a new contract at the Parc des Princes.

The World Cup winner is due to become a free agent at the end of the current season and recently admitted that he asked to leave PSG during the summer transfer window.

Mbappe is being tipped to complete a free transfer to Real Madrid in 2022, but Leonardo has refused to throw in the towel and continues to talk up the prospect of a renewal.

Speaking to Festival dello Sport, the 51-year-old said: "Our idea is to extend Kylian Mbappe's contract. Nothing has changed in our plans. Kylian is a jewel, he is incredibly perfect for PSG... then we've Kylian, Leo [Messi], Ney. We've never planned PSG future without Mbappe."

Leonardo also claimed that Madrid should be "punished" for their approach to a possible deal for Mbappe, adding: "From Madrid they deny, but I think Real Madrid have been doing a job to buy Mbappé [as a free agent] for a long time. For two years they have been speaking publicly about Mbappé. This must be punished."

Mbappe has registered four goals and five assists from 11 games in all competitions this season and is currently preparing for France's clash with Spain in the Nations League final on Sunday. body check tags ::
