Fabio Capello: 'Real Madrid should focus on defensive signings'

Real Madrid should focus on signing "a couple of central defenders" rather than moving for Paris Saint-Germain's Kylian Mbappe, according to their former manager Fabio Capello.

Former Real Madrid boss Fabio Capello has said that his former club should focus on signing "a couple of central defenders" rather than moving for Kylian Mbappe.

Los Blancos are expected to make another strong play for Mbappe in 2022, having failed to convince Paris Saint-Germain to sell the France international before the end of the summer transfer window.

However, Capello has claimed that Carlo Ancelotti's team should instead be looking to boost their defence, having allowed Raphael Varane and Sergio Ramos to leave over the summer.

"They'll need time to build a strong team, Madrid need a couple of central defenders," Capello told Corriere dello Sport. "I saw them against Mallorca... Mamma mia! [But] up front they have no problems, even without Mbappe. They have interesting players."

Real Madrid brought David Alaba to the Bernabeu on a free transfer ahead of the new season, but the capital giants are short of experienced options in the middle of their defence.

As well as Mbappe, the La Liga leaders are allegedly preparing a move for Borussia Dortmund's Erling Braut Haaland during next summer's transfer window. body check tags ::
