Newcastle United sign Japan forward Yoshinori Muto

Newcastle United complete the signing of Japan forward Yoshinori Muto from Mainz 05 on a four-year contract.

Newcastle United have completed the signing of Japan forward Yoshinori Muto from Mainz 05.

The 26-year-old has signed a four-year contract with the Magpies, becoming the fifth new arrival at St James' Park in this summer's transfer window.

The forward, who represented Japan at the 2018 World Cup, leaves Mainz with a record of 23 goals in 71 appearances for the German outfit in all competitions.

"I am very happy to be a player for Newcastle United. I am really looking forward to playing in front of the fans," Muto told the club's official website.

"As the first Japanese Newcastle United player, I am honoured to be a player for such a big club. I hope to achieve good results – that is what I am here to do. I would like to perform well and leave my name in Newcastle's history."

Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez added: "I am really pleased to have Yoshinori Muto with us. We were following him for quite a while. Hopefully he can bring us his energy and work-rate and help the team to improve and be better for the new season."

Muto has not been cleared to face Augsburg this weekend as his visa has not yet been processed.
