Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has revealed that Anthony Gordon will miss Friday's Premier League meeting with Nottingham Forest.

Gordon has made four Premier League appearances since joining the Magpies from Everton in a £40m January deal.

The 22-year-old was given his first Newcastle start for their 2-0 defeat to Manchester City on March 4, but he did not come through the game unscathed.

The forward picked up an ankle injury, which prevented him from training in the build-up to Sunday's narrow win over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

In his absence, the Magpies claimed a 2-1 victory thanks to goals from Alexander Isak and substitute Miguel Almiron.

After the game, Howe revealed that Gordon will definitely miss Friday's away encounter with Forest, and indicated that a return after the international break cannot be guaranteed.

"It was a strange one because after the game (at Man City) there was no sign of an injury," Howe told reporters.

"It's one of those that got worse on the day of the game, it was from a tackle, and when he came in, it was swollen up.

"He had a scan and we were hoping we could get away with it and he would be alright, but unfortunately not.

"He'll probably miss two games (including the win over Wolves), and I'm not sure whether he'll be back after the international break. We hope so, but that's not 100 per cent certain."

After ending their five-game winless run in all competitions, Newcastle moved up to fifth position as they look to qualify for European competition for the first time since participating in the Europa League 10 years ago.

The Magpies are currently four points adrift of fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur, who have played two games more.

Newcastle will have a two-week break after they face Forest, but they will return from the international period with a busy schedule.

Howe's side will play seven games in April, beginning with a difficult home meeting with Manchester United, who beat the Magpies 2-0 in last month's EFL Cup final. body check tags ::
