How Netherlands could line up against Scotland

Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at how Netherlands could line up for Wednesday's International Friendlies clash with Scotland.

With just two games and under two weeks until their Euro 2020 campaign begins, Netherlands come into Wednesday's friendly against Scotland with the aim of building momentum and settling on their starting XI.

Crucial defender Virgil van Dijk recently confirmed that he will be out for the European Championship and the preceding friendlies, having missed the majority of the Premier League campaign through a ligament injury.

In his absence, Matthijs de Ligt and Stefan de Vrij should partner up at the heart of the defence.

Manchester City centre-back Nathan Ake will also push for a starting spot, having recently lifted the Premier League trophy, but he could instead be deployed at left-back to maximise the defensive quality in the side, with Denzel Dumfries occupying the other full-back slot.

Experienced defender Daley Blind has been included in the squad for the European Championships, but he will not feature on Wednesday due to injury.

The key man in their attack will be Memphis Depay, who starred for Lyon in Ligue 1 this season with 20 goals and 12 assists in 37 league games.

A notable absence from the squad is Steven Bergwijn, with the winger likely missing out due to a disappointing campaign for Tottenham Hotspur.

Luuk de Jong could continue to lead the line, having netted in all three of Oranje's games in the last international break.

Frenkie De Jong and Georginio Wijnaldum recently joined up with the rest of the Netherlands squad, and they should partner up in midfield on Wednesday.

That could come at the expense of Donny van de Beek, who has been given limited opportunities for Manchester United this season after a move from Ajax.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen is yet to arrive at the camp, having recently tested positive for COVID-19.

In his absence, Maarten Stekelenburg and Tim Krul will compete to start between the sticks, and the experienced Ajax man is expected to be preferred.

Netherlands possible starting lineup: Stekelenburg; Dumfries, De Ligt, De Vrij, Ake; Wijnaldum, De Jong; Berghuis, Klaassen, Depay; De Jong
