Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is hopeful that the club will be able to agree a new contract with Jesse Lingard in the near future.

The England international returned to Old Trafford over the summer after an impressive loan spell at West Ham United and has made six appearances for the Red Devils this season, scoring twice and providing one assist.

Lingard has only played 45 minutes of Premier League football this term, though, and has struggled to work his way into the first XI despite impressing off the bench.

The 28-year-old's current agreement is due to expire next June, but Solskjaer has revealed that the club are working on a fresh contract for the academy product.

"Jesse's had a good start to the season, of course, he's come on and scored a few goals for us that's been very important for us," Solskjaer told reporters.

"We want to prolong his contract, we see him as an important player for us, it's up to him maybe up to me to give him more playing time because he deserves to. Hopefully, we can get a deal sorted for Jesse because we really rate him."

Newcastle United and Barcelona have both been linked with the Englishman in recent days. body check tags ::
