Manchester United's hopes of signing Dayot Upamecano ended by Champions League exit?

A report claims that Manchester United's early exit from the Champions League has cost them the chance of signing Dayot Upamecano from RB Leipzig.

Manchester United will reportedly have to wait until the end of the season before making a move for RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano following their Champions League exit.

The Red Devils had supposedly made bringing in a new central-defensive partner for Harry Maguire a top priority for January, with Upamecano topping their list of targets.

However, The Athletic claims that United will now either have to look elsewhere or hold off until next summer at the earliest if they are to sign the France international.

Leipzig are under no pressure to sell Upamecano, who has been linked with a number of Europe's elite clubs, especially now that they are through to the Champions League last 16.

United fell at the first hurdle, exiting the competition at the group stage this week following a 3-2 loss to the German club, a game for which Upamecano was suspended.

The report suggests that United have lost out on as much as £50m as a result of dropping into the Europa League and must adjust accordingly.
