Newcastle United are reportedly on the verge of securing the signature of Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson following successful talks on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old's future has been the subject of much speculation in recent weeks, with the Englishman keen to leave Old Trafford this summer in search of regular first-team action.

Newcastle came close to signing the stopper in January and have allegedly since reignited their interest ahead of the opening of the summer transfer window.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Henderson was in Newcastle on Wednesday for talks, and he is now closing in on a switch to St James' Park.

The report claims that the Englishman is likely to move on a season-long loan, but a permanent transfer could still potentially be agreed between the two parties.

Henderson was allegedly expected to start the 2021-22 campaign as Man United's number one, but he was sidelined for a long period with COVID-19, which allowed David de Gea to secure the gloves.

De Gea has been one of the team's most consistent performers in a poor season, meanwhile, and the Spaniard is thought to be firmly in Erik ten Hag's plans for next term.

Henderson has not made a single Premier League appearance for the Red Devils this season, featuring on just three occasions in all competitions.

The stopper still has more than three years left to run on his contract at Old Trafford, but he needs regular action in the first half of next season to stand a chance of making the England squad for the 2022 World Cup.

In total, Henderson has made 29 appearances for Man United in all competitions, returning to the club in 2020 after two successful years on loan at Sheffield United, one of which was in the Premier League.

The Englishman was Man United's number one for a period of the 2020-21 campaign, but he is now firmly back behind De Gea in the pecking order, which is expected to lead to a summer exit.

Lee Grant is also likely to leave the Red Devils on a free transfer this summer, so there could be a new addition in the goalkeeping department, even though Tom Heaton has a contract until next June.

De Gea will again start between the sticks against Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Sunday, as Man United bid to secure sixth position in the table and a spot in next year's Europa League.

Incoming head coach Ten Hag, who only finished his 2021-22 campaign as Ajax manager last weekend, could reportedly be in the stands at Selhurst Park to watch his new side in action.
