Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount has said that his side need to improve in a number of areas.

The Red Devils suffered their fifth defeat of the season on Saturday afternoon, with Crystal Palace recording a 1-0 victory at Old Trafford in the Premier League.

Man United have now been beaten in four of their seven league games this term, with a return of nine points leaving them in 10th position in the table.

Mount has had a frustrating start to his Red Devils career due to injury, but the 24-year-old featured against Palace in the EFL Cup on Tuesday before again facing the Eagles in the league on Saturday.

The England international is now looking to kick on, but the midfielder has admitted that his side have a lot of improving to do in the coming months if it is to be a successful campaign.

"We want to win these games. We know we need to win these games and it's been a difficult start," Mount told MUTV after the clash at Old Trafford.

"As soon as they got the goal, they defended really well, they got bodies behind the ball and made it difficult to create. We had a few chances but it wasn't enough.

"We know we need to go back and look at the areas that we need to improve on – and we need to improve because we want to win games, we want to win every competition we're in, we want to go right to the end. So it's a tough one to take.

"It was a tough start with the injury and a frustrating one but I used that time to look at areas where I could improve and coming back in the team last game, it felt good.

"But you don't want to lose games and, especially at home with the fans, we want to perform for them and win games for them. And yeah, we need to improve. We need to go away and look at some areas that just weren't there.

"But there are games coming thick and fast now: every three days we're playing in different competitions and this is a new start. The Champions League at home under the lights – it's an exciting one to play in and hopefully we can perform and win that game now."

Res Devils boss Erik ten Hag also said after the match that his side would "learn" from the loss.

"Always, we learn from the game. We learn we are to do better in the final part of the game. The first goal is very important, if you concede it, you still have to win. You have to find a way to win and we didn't, so we have to blame ourselves," he added.

Man United's attention will now switch to the Champions League, with Turkish giants Galatasaray travelling to Manchester next week. body check tags ::
