Manchester United attacker Marcus Rashford equalled a goalscoring feat first achieved by Robin van Persie in the Red Devils' 3-1 loss to Arsenal on Sunday.

The England international had struggled to make an impact in Man United's first two games of the season against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Tottenham Hotspur, having been deployed in a central role.

However, with Anthony Martial coming back in to occupy the number nine spot, Rashford had now been shifted out to his favoured left-wing position and came up with an assist in last weekend's 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest.

The 25-year-old continued out wide at the Emirates, where Erik ten Hag's side were allowed to pass the ball around the back unchallenged in the first half, albeit while struggling to create many clear-cut chances.

A sloppy pass from Kai Havertz set Man United away on the counter-attack, though, and Christian Eriksen picked out the run of Rashford with a wonderful through ball in the 27th minute, before the Englishman cut inside and found the net via the post and Aaron Ramsdale's fingertips.

In doing so, Rashford made the net bulge for the third Premier League game in a row against Arsenal, becoming only the second Manchester United player to achieve that feat since 1992.

Before Sunday's affair, Rashford had also opened the scoring in a 3-2 loss at the Emirates in January, prior to which he netted twice in a 3-1 victory at Old Trafford 12 months ago.

The only previous Man United player to score in three successive Premier League games against Arsenal was ex-Gunner Van Persie, who did so in each of his first three matches versus his old club after joining the Red Devils in 2012.

However, Rashford's opening effort was ultimately in vain, as Arsenal needed just one minute to draw level in front of the home crowd as Martin Odegaard finished off a well-worked move.

Man United managed to get to half time at 1-1 and kept Mikel Arteta's men at bay during the second period, although the Gunners had a penalty overturned after Aaron Wan-Bissaka was adjudged to have fouled Havertz.

Things went from bad to worse for Arsenal when Alejandro Garnacho appeared to have propelled Man United to victory in the 88th minute, but the Argentine had gone a fraction too early, and the goal was chalked off.

Eight minutes of added time went on the board as Arsenal pressed for a winner, and the hosts' pressure finally paid dividends with 96 minutes on the clock, as Bukayo Saka's corner fell to Declan Rice to fire a deflected half-volley beyond Andre Onana at his near post.

Rice also earned a slice of history with his first Arsenal goal, which was the latest-ever winning goal in a Premier League fixture between the Gunners and Man United, but the hosts' joy did not stop there.

As Man United huffed and puffed for a late leveller, space was exposed at the back for Fabio Vieira and Gabriel Jesus to exploit, and the latter calmly slotted home for his first-ever goal against the Red Devils.

Arteta's unbeaten side will enter the international break sat fifth in the table, six places better off than six-point Man United, who are languishing in 11th. body check tags ::
