Jose Mourinho: 'First half was awful'

By , European Football Editor | 4d
Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho admits that his team were "defensively awful" in the first half of Saturday's Premier League clash with Bournemouth.

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has admitted that his team were "defensively awful" in the first half of Saturday's Premier League clash with Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.

Callum Wilson sent Bournemouth ahead in the 11th minute of the league affair, and the Cherries had opportunities to add to the scoring before Anthony Martial levelled the scores 10 minutes before the break.

Marcus Rashford then came up with a late winner for United, who have moved into seventh spot in the table, just two points off fourth-placed Arsenal.

Mourinho has conceded that the Red Devils were fortunate to be level at the interval due to their "disaster" first-half performance, but has paid tribute to his team's display in the second 45 minutes.

"It was the whole first half. I said at half-time I was the luckiest manager in the Premier League in a half when it should be like 5/6-2," Mourinho told BT Sport.

"We were defensively awful. As a team we didn't press or do any of the week we did in the week. People watching this game will not believe how hard we worked this week. The first half was a disaster. The second half was much better. We created lots of chances and deserved to score before the 92nd minute."

United will return to Champions League action with a trip to Juventus on Wednesday night.
