Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has accepted the blame for his role in Saturday's 4-0 defeat to Brentford in the Premier League.

The Red Devils were looking to bounce back from their opening-weekend defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion when they made the trip to London, but Erik ten Hag's side were on the end of a four-goal defeat, which has left them at the bottom of the Premier League table.

De Gea allowed a strike from Josh Dasilva under his body in the 10th minute, before Brentford scored three times in the next 25 minutes to secure a four-goal advantage in the latter stages of the first period.

The Spaniard asked to be interviewed after the clash with Thomas Frank's side, as he wanted to "take responsibility" for his part in the shock result.

"I want to take responsibility. I think I cost my team three points. It was a poor performance from me. I think so. That can happen in football," De Gea told Sky Sports News.

"We should react better but I should have saved the first shot. If I had the first result might be different. Maybe I have to read the game better and kick it long. We always try to play we always try to have the ball.

"We are not like other teams. We see teams concede a goal and then win 5-1. For us I made a mistake and it may have changed the result.

"It is too easy to play pre-season when you play for nothing. I need to keep working as much as I can. We stick together as a team and keep working. Teams are improving a lot and we stay where we are. It was a good pre-season but it is not enough. We need to play for the badge and play for the club."

Man United are now preparing for the visit of Liverpool on Monday week, and De Gea has called on the players to "play for the badge" when they take on the Reds.

"It doesn't matter to be honest, who we play against," the stopper said in a separate interview with MUTV. "We need to prepare [for] the game very well. We have a long week. It's going to be tough of course, after this defeat. But let's put our lives in training, put our lives on the games, and let's play for the badge and our pride."

Meanwhile, Man United boss Ten Hag said in his post-match interview that he 'felt sorry' for the supporters that had made the trip to Brentford.

"I feel really sorry for the fans," said the Dutchman. "They give everything to support us and we let them down.

"I feel really sorry for them. This is not the way I want to play, this is not the way I want to deliver. They make a lot of effort to come over here, the supporters."

Man United have now lost each of their last four Premier League matches, having also been beaten by Brighton and Crystal Palace in their final two games of the 2021-22 campaign.

The Red Devils will follow the game against Liverpool with a trip to Southampton on August 27 before visiting Leicester City in their opening match of September. body check tags ::
