Manchester United head coach Erik ten Hag has revealed that Alejandro Garnacho is "back on the pitch", with the youngster closing in on a return from an ankle injury.

The 18-year-old has been sidelined since the middle of March due to an ankle problem that he suffered in the latter stages of the goalless draw with Southampton at Old Trafford.

Garnacho has missed his side's last four Premier League matches, in addition to their last two FA Cup affairs and last three fixtures in the Europa League.

The teenager is now close to being available for selection once again, having returned to the training field head of Thursday's clash with Tottenham Hotspur in North London.

Garnacho will not be involved in the game with Ryan Mason's side but could potentially be in the squad against Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon.

"Garnacho is back on the pitch but he's not ready for the game tomorrow," Ten Hag told MUTV ahead of the clash at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The forward has been a regular for Man United during the 2022-23 campaign, scoring four goals and registering five assists in 29 appearances in all competitions.

The youngster only played one minute of his side's first 12 league games of the season but was then a regular in the first team before picking up the ankle injury against Southampton.

Garnacho only has a contract with the Red Devils until next summer, but it is understood that he is close to reaching an agreement over a new long-term deal at Old Trafford.

The teenager's return is hugely positive news for Man United at a key stage of the season, but he could be unavailable for the club in the final stages of the campaign.

Garnacho has been named in the Argentina Under-20s squad for the Under-20s World Cup, which is due to begin on May 20 and run until June 11.

The forward has allegedly made it clear to the Red Devils that he wants to play in the competition.

As a result, he is set to be missing for Man United's last two matches of their Premier League campaign against Bournemouth and Fulham, in addition to the FA Cup final at the start of June.

Garnacho has played five times for Argentina Under-20s, scoring four times in the process, with his last appearances for the national side coming in June 2022.
