Manchester United have been knocked out of the Champions League in the round of 16 courtesy of a 1-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the second leg of their contest on Tuesday night.

The tie was delicately poised following a 1-1 draw in the first leg last month, but Renan Lodi's first-half header at Old Trafford decided the tie, with the Spanish champions running out 2-1 winners.

Man United had a brilliant chance to make the breakthrough in the 13th minute when Anthony Elanga met a low cross from Bruno Fernandes, but Jan Oblak managed to make the save with his face, before David de Gea did brilliantly to keep out a long-range strike down the other end three minutes later.

Five minutes later, the home side had a shout for a penalty when Reinildo kicked through the back of Fernandes in an attempt to win the ball, but the referee was not interested.

Atletico had the ball in the back of the net in the 34th minute when Joao Felix slotted a Marcos Llorente cross home from close range, but the latter was just offside.

The visitors managed to make the breakthrough in the 41st minute, though, when Lodi headed a deep Antoine Griezmann cross into the back of the net.

There was controversy about the goal, with Elanga seemingly fouled earlier in the move, but the header was allowed to stand despite protests from the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Fernandes and Harry Maguire, handing Atletico a 2-1 advantage in the tie at the interval.

Man United came close to levelling early in the second period when Elanga broke into a dangerous area, but the attacker's effort was just wide of the far post.

Jadon Sancho then volleyed over the Atletico crossbar just before the hour mark, with the home side desperately attempting to find an equaliser on the night and indeed in the tie.

Raphael Varane had a close-range header saved by Oblak in the 76th minute, before Diogo Dalot fired one wide of the far post eight minutes later, as Atletico sat back defending their lead.

Juan Mata was introduced moments later, with the Spaniard joining fellow substitutes Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford and Edinson Cavani on the field.

There was to be no late celebrations from the home supporters inside Old Trafford, though, as Lodi's header decided the tie, sending Diego Simeone's side into the quarter-finals of the competition. body check tags ::
