Manchester City are considering whether to trigger the £25m buyback clause they inserted in Douglas Luiz's Aston Villa contract, according to a report.

Manchester City are reportedly considering whether to trigger Douglas Luiz's £25m buyback clause this summer.

The Aston Villa man was contracted to the Citizens between 2017 and 2019 following a £10m move from Vasco da Gama, but he left without making a single appearance for the club after failing to obtain a work permit.

Luiz secured a permanent transfer to Aston Villa in 2019 and has since become a key player under Dean Smith, making 69 Premier League appearances for the club over the past two seasons.

City reportedly inserted a £25m buyback clause into his deal when he signed for the West Midlands outfit, and 90Min claims that the Premier League champions are now considering triggering it following his stellar performances.

The report claims that Pep Guardiola remains a big fan of the 23-year-old, but a host of clubs - including Atletico Madrid - are also in the race for his services.

Luiz started 32 of Aston Villa's 38 Premier League games in the 2020-21 season, and his deal with Smith's side runs for another two years. body check tags ::
