Manchester City will reportedly reward midfielder Fernandinho with a one-year contract extension in order to avoid seeing the player leave for free in the summer.

The Brazilian has been an indispensable influence under Pep Guardiola, making 17 appearances in the Premier League so far this term - most of them coming from central defence.

With his contract expiring in June, Fernandinho now has the licence to sign a pre-contract agreement with other clubs outside of England.

According to The Sun, however, the Premier League champions plan to hand the player a bumper one-year deal in order to avoid seeing him leave on a free transfer.

Currently in his seventh season at the Etihad, Fernandinho's performances at the back have been crucial for City amid injuries to Aymeric Laporte and John Stones.
