Manchester City set new Premier League scoring record in Newcastle United win

Manchester City set a new Premier League record in their 3-2 win over Newcastle United, becoming the first team to score in 31 successive games against the same opponent.

Manchester City have set a new Premier League goalscoring record in their 3-2 win at St James' Park against Newcastle United.

Getting on the scoresheet in that encounter means that City have now scored in 31 consecutive Premier League matches against the Magpies.

That is the longest streak that one side has ever had against the same opponent in the history of the competition, with their last blank coming in a 0-0 draw at the Etihad Stadium back in November 2006.

City were a much different side back then, with the likes of Paul Dickov, Joey Barton and Georgios Samaras in the team which featured in the stalemate, as they would go on to finish 14th.

Top spot is the ambition now, and the win closed the gap on Liverpool at the Premier League summit to just two points.

Bernardo Silva was the man who opened the scoring in the 3-2 victory, as Pep Guardiola's men then had to come from behind after going 2-1 down shortly before half time.

On his return from a long-term injury, Kevin De Bruyne was inspirational in the comeback, scoring the equaliser before setting up Oscar Bobb for the winner.

City's goals this evening mean that they have now found the net 16 times in their last five league visits to Newcastle, as 4-3 and 4-0 wins in 2021 were followed by a scintillating 3-3 draw last season.

It has also taken their overall Premier League tally against Newcastle to over 100 goals, as Bobb's winner was the 101st that they have scored against the Magpies - more than any other league opponent.

While there have been some high-scoring thrillers at St James' Park between the two sides in recent years, City have been much more dominant at home, recording plenty of thrashings.

Despite only beating Newcastle 1-0 at home in the reverse fixture back in August, Man City have hit Newcastle for six, and condemned the Magpies to three 5-0 defeats in the past eight seasons.

Another three goals conceded for Newcastle means that they have already let in 32 goals after just 21 games this season, one short of their tally from all of last season - where Eddie Howe's side had the joint-best record in the division.

Newcastle's three defeats post-Christmas have seen them concede 10 goals, and also allow an xG of 14.1 on their goal, after Liverpool's record-breaking tally of 7.2 in their 4-2 win at Anfield on New Year's Day. body check tags ::
