How Manchester City could line up against Sheffield United

Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at how Manchester City could line up for Saturday's FA Cup semi-final clash with Sheffield United.

Manchester City defender Nathan Ake has emerged as an injury doubt for Saturday's FA Cup semi-final clash with Sheffield United at Wembley Stadium.

The Dutchman was forced off midway through the second half of City's 1-1 second-leg draw with Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday after sustaining a hamstring injury.

Ake is hopeful that his issue is "not too bad" but the defender is at risk of missing out this weekend, which could see fellow left-footed defender Aymeric Laporte start in his place at left-back.

Pep Guardiola was boosted by the return of Phil Foden to his matchday squad on Wednesday, with the attacker recovering from appendix surgery to feature on the substitutes' bench.

It remains to be seen whether the England international – who has been involved in seven goals in his last six FA Cup appearances – is fit to start on Saturday, though, while Guardiola has issued concerns regarding his "exhausted" City side ahead of the semi-final, with rotation to be considered by the Catalan boss amidst a busy fixture schedule.

First-choice goalkeeper Ederson is set to be replaced between the sticks by cup goalkeeper Stefan Ortega, while either Rico Lewis or former Sheffield United man Kyle Walker could return to the first XI if Guardiola opts to select a natural right-back.

Kalvin Phillips will challenge Rodri for a place in centre-midfield, but Ilkay Gundogan and Kevin De Bruyne may retain their places from the start, although their minutes will likely be managed with one eye on next Wednesday's Premier League title showdown with Arsenal.

Top scorer Erling Braut Haaland – who netted a hat-trick in the 6-0 FA Cup quarter-final win over Burnley last month – is also unlikely to play the full 90 minutes at Wembley, but he could continue to lead the line to begin with ahead of Julian Alvarez, while Riyad Mahrez could return on the right flank at the expense of Bernardo Silva.

Manchester City possible starting lineup: Ortega; Stones, Dias, Laporte; Lewis, Rodri; Mahrez, Gundogan, De Bruyne, Grealish; Haaland body check tags ::
