Liverpool star Sadio Mane wants to apologise to Manchester City's Ederson

Liverpool star Sadio Mane says that he wants to get in touch with Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson to apologise for his red-card offence.

Liverpool star Sadio Mane has admitted that he would like to give Ederson a "proper" apology after causing facial injuries to the Manchester City goalkeeper.

Mane was sent off and subsequently given a three-match ban for catching his opponent in the face with a high foot during the Reds' 5-0 defeat at the Etihad Stadium earlier this month.

The Senegal international has insisted that he did not intentionally hurt Ederson, who was stretchered off the pitch and later required eight stitches, but the challenge was deemed by the Football Association to be a red-card offence.

Speaking about the incident to ESPN, Mane said: "If I could do better to [avoid] the collision, I would do my best to do so. But he also did the same. I can't do anything now.

"I would never do this [intentionally], [but] it is part of football. I could not do anything else, I was going to make contact. I was thinking it was a yellow card.

"[Ederson and I] don't know each other, but I would love to have his number and send him a proper message. Honestly, after this incident, I was not okay. I was thinking about the red card, obviously, but we are human beings and we have to be nice to each other."

Mane will be eligible to play again after this weekend's Premier League match against Leicester City.
