Ian Wright believes Trent Alexander-Arnold England omission was "harsh"

Ian Wright believes that the omission of Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold from the England squad for this month's fixtures was "harsh".

Ian Wright has claimed that leaving Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold out of the England squad for this month's fixtures was "harsh" on the youngster.

The Scouser made his England debut in 2018 at the age of 19, and has been involved in the national team setup ever since, making 12 appearances.

Gareth Southgate explained that he left the full-back out of the squad due to a dip in form, but Wright believes Alexander-Arnold's omission may be down to the England manager having a preference towards Reece James, Kieran Trippier and Kyle Walker.

Speaking to ITV Sport, the Arsenal legend said: "Yes, there's a dip in form but for him to be left out on form when I've seen players picked for England who have been on bad form, it seems a little harsh.

"Just say to him, 'you're not in my plans because I have him, him and him', rather than say 'form'. I found that a bit harsh."

The Reds defender now has a lot of competition in his way to get back into the England squad, which he will be hoping to overcome by the time Euro 2020 kicks off in June.

The 22-year-old has 34 appearances and five assists for Liverpool in all competitions this season.
