Dermot Gallagher: 'No issues with first Tottenham Hotspur penalty'

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher says that Spurs forward Harry Kane was not offside and was fouled for his side's first penalty against Liverpool.

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has said that there were no issues with Tottenham Hotspur's first penalty against Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

Harry Kane appeared to receive the ball in an offside position before going down under the challenge of goalkeeper Loris Karius, although both incidents were open to interpretation.

A miscue from Dejan Lovren helped the ball through to Kane, who remained behind the Liverpool defence, and Karius made minimal contact with the striker who was attempting to take the ball around the Liverpool stopper.

However, Gallagher has insisted that despite a prolonged conversation between referee Jon Moss and assistant Eddie Smart, the two officials came to the correct decision.

Gallagher told Sky Sports News: "I think it is a foul. I think that the goalkeeper catches him.

"Regarding the offside, Kane is in an offside position, there's no doubt about it. However, once Lovren takes ownership of the ball, which he does without doubt, that begins a new phase of play.

"What the assistant has to do, Eddie Smart, he has to make up his mind whether Lovren has played the ball and whether Kane moved towards him and interfered with play, which he didn't."

Kane missed the spot kick, but Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has criticised the awarding of both of Spurs penalties in the 2-2 draw on Merseyside.

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has also claimed that Kane dived to win the second-half penalty.
