Liverpool are reportedly in danger of being kicked out of the EFL Cup after allegedly fielding an ineligible player in Wednesday's tie with MK Dons.

Liverpool are reportedly the subject of an investigation after allegedly fielding an ineligible player against MK Dons in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night.

Manager Jurgen Klopp made sweeping changes for the fixture against the League One outfit, with goals from James Milner and Ki-Jana Hoever earning the Premier League leaders a 2-0 victory.

However, The Independent claims that the Merseyside giants could face expulsion after an administrative error involving one of their players.

While the player involved remains unnamed, the report suggests that the issue is regarding the lack of international clearance.

Speaking to the same outlet, an EFL spokesperson said: "We are currently considering the matter."

As it stands, Liverpool are scheduled to host Arsenal at the end of October, although MK Dons may benefit with a second-successive clash at home with a top English side if their previous opponents are expelled from the tournament.
