How Hungary could line up against Germany

Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at how Hungary could line up for Wednesday's Group F clash with Germany.

After last weekend's 1-1 draw with the reigning world champions, Group F outsiders Hungary can become national icons on Wednesday by beating Germany to make it out of Euro 2020's 'Group of Death'.

Though Antoine Griezmann managed to salvage a point for France in Budapest, the Hungarians could now go through in second place with an unlikely win at Munich's Allianz Stadium, and are likely to undertake that task by sitting deep and hoping to sneak a goal on the counter.

However, after captain and star striker Adam Szalai went off 26 minutes into Saturday's game with concussion, he is a serious doubt to feature against the country where he has spent most of his nomadic career - despite head coach Marco Rossi initially claiming the Mainz man's withdrawal was only a precaution.

In his probable absence, former Chicago Fire forward Nemanja Nikolic is expected to deputise, with RB Leipzig goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi stepping up to take the captain's armband. The Budapest-born stopper posted 15 clean sheets from 30 league starts last season, after becoming the first Hungarian to appear in the Champions League semi-finals during the 2019-20 campaign.

Stand-in skipper Gulacsi has already been named his nation's Player of the Year on three occasions and is likely to be busy throughout the 90 minutes in Bavaria.

One of his Leipzig colleagues, Willi Orban, is set to start at the heart of defence but is among three men who, with a booking, would miss the Magyars' next match if they achieve qualification - the others being Endre Botka and Loic Nego.

Born in Kaiserslautern, Orban has both German and Hungarian citizenship and was once a youth international with Germany - last turning out for their Under-21s in 2015, before switching allegiance three years ago.

Another Bundesliga boy expected to feature is Freiburg's Roland Sallai, and the ex-Palermo and APOEL forward will shoulder the burden of Hungarian goalscoring hopes, despite having only netted four times in 24 previous appearances.

Hungary possible starting lineup: Gulacsi; Botka, Orban, At. Szalai; Nagy; Nego, Kleinheisler, Schafer, Fiola; Nikolic, Sallai
