How Germany could line up against Latvia

Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at how Germany could line up for Monday's international friendly with Latvia.

Germany manager Joachim Low will have Ilkay Gundogan, Antonio Rudiger, Kai Havertz and Timo Werner available to select again for Monday's international friendly against Latvia.

The quartet were rested for the 1-1 draw against Denmark on Wednesday after all starting last weekend's Champions League final between Manchester City and Chelsea.

Low, who will leave his post as national team manager after Euro 2020, may be tempted to throw all four players into his starting XI against Latvia as he looks to find a winning formula, although it is hard to envisage Havertz and Thomas Muller easily playing in the same side.

Indeed, experienced duo Mats Hummels and Muller were reintroduced to Low's lineup from the start against Denmark, with Bayern Munich forward Muller utilised as a false nine. The 31-year-old should reprise this role on Monday.

Muller's club teammates Serge Gnabry and Leroy Sane were required to make penetrative runs beyond him, and we expect Werner to replace the latter in order to provide more of a direct goal threat.

With Toni Kroos and Leon Goretzka still injury doubts, Gundogan's availability may allow Low to revert to a back four having been creatively lacking with a back five against the Danes.

As such, Rudiger is likely to replace Matthias Ginter alongside Hummels at the heart of the defence, leaving Lukas Klostermann and Niklas Sule to fight for a spot at right-back.

We expect the Bayern man to marginally win that duel to provide greater defensive balance, as Freiburg's attacking left-back Christian Gunter may make his first ever start for the national team in place of Robin Gosens.

Germany possible starting lineup: Neuer; Sule, Rudiger, Hummels, Gunter; Neuhaus, Kimmich, Gundogan; Gnabry, Muller, Werner body check tags ::
