Focus on Paul Pogba’s performance against West Ham

Pogba played 70 minutes against the Hammers.

Paul Pogba’s future was the subject of more speculation this week after Jose Mourinho stripped him of the Manchester United vice-captaincy and then had a heated training-ground exchange with the France star.

Nevertheless, Pogba was in the starting line-up for United’s lunchtime trip to West Ham.

Here, Press Association Sport assesses his performance.

Attitude

Paul Pogba cut a frustrated figure (Nigel French/PA)

Pogba’s body language can at times be deceptive given his languid style, but there was no disguising his frustration at times, particularly when he rebuked his team-mates after being closed down in the box.

Effectiveness

Paul Pogba struggled to get into the game (Tim Ireland/AP)

Stationed on the left of a midfield three Pogba ended up chasing Andiy Yarmolenko down the wing more than he did getting forward.

Goal threat

An ambitious shot from 30 yards, blocked by the leg of Pablo Zabaleta, was the sum total of Pogba’s attacking intent.

Overall

Jose Mourinho replaced Paul Pogba after 70 minutes (John Walton/PA)

He was by no means the worst offender in a pedestrian Manchester United display, but the fact Mourinho had seen enough with 20 minutes to go and hauled his record signing off said it all.
