England centre-back Phil Jones to sit out Nigeria match?

Phil Jones will reportedly be given the day off when England take on Nigeria as his partner is due to give birth.

England defender Phil Jones is expected to sit out next weekend's pre-World Cup friendly against Nigeria, according to a report.

Sky Sports News suggests that the 26-year-old will be given the day off as his partner is due to give birth in the next week.

Jones's likely absence leaves England light of options, with only three other recognised centre-backs for manager Gareth Southgate to choose from - John Stones, Harry Maguire and Gary Cahill.

Burnley's James Tarkowski has already withdrawn from the standby list as he requires a hernia operation, but the report indicates that no replacement will be called up.

Southgate is said to be happy with his strength in depth, as Kyle Walker and Eric Dier can also slot into the backline if required.

England follow up Saturday's friendly against Nigeria with a match against Costa Rica at Elland Road five days later.
