Roman Abramovich 'puts Chelsea up for sale'

Owner Roman Abramovich reportedly puts Chelsea up for sale, amid alleged concerns over his British assets being seized and frozen due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Roman Abramovich is reportedly inviting offers for Chelsea as he looks to sell the Premier League club at the earliest opportunity.

On the back of Russia's military invasion of Ukraine, Russian oligarch and billionaire Abramovich faces the real possibility of seeing his assets either seized or frozen by the British government.

That led to a response on Saturday which saw him attempt to pass on stewardship and care of the club to the trustees of Chelsea's charitable Foundation, a move which is yet to be formally accepted.

According to The Telegraph, it now appears that Abramovich wants to end his near two-decade reign at Stamford Bridge by selling the club to the highest bidder.

The report claims that Abramovich is looking to recoup £4bn for the European and recently-crowned world champions, although that figure being met looks highly unlikely given potential bidders know that he would prefer a quick sale.

Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss has already revealed that he has been contacted about potentially taking over from Abramovich, but he suggested that the 55-year-old was 'asking for too much money'.

Chelsea have won 21 pieces of silverware since Abramovich bought the club in 2003. body check tags ::
