Antonio Conte: 'Chelsea deserved to win against Atletico Madrid'

Antonio Conte insists that Chelsea were worthy of a win in their 1-1 draw against Atletico Madrid in Group C of the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Antonio Conte has claimed that Chelsea were worthy of a win in their 1-1 draw against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Saul Niguez gave Diego Simeone's side a 56th-minute lead at Stamford Bridge, heading home from a corner, but the Blues equalised through a Stefan Savic own goal.

The result in London, coupled with Roma's 1-0 victory over Qarabag FK, ensured that Chelsea finished second in Group C and will be unseeded in the last-16 draw.

"I think tonight it was a good game and a good performance," Conte told reporters. "I think we deserved to win the game because we had so many chances to score and you have to try to take them.

"Instead, their goalkeeper was I think their best player and in other circumstances could be more accurate.

"But at the same time, we conceded a goal and we have to improve because after a corner there were a lot of mistakes. When you play this type of game the defence is very important."

The draw for the next round of the Champions League will take place on Monday, December 11, with the two-legged matches played across February and March.
