Sports Mole previews Wednesday's FA Cup clash between Barrow and Ipswich Town, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.
Sports Mole

Barrow will welcome Ipswich Town to the Dunes Hotel Stadium on Wednesday evening, with a spot in the third round of the FA Cup on offer to both teams.

The pair played out a goalless draw when they met at Portman Road on December 4, meaning that a replay is required to determine which team progresses from the second round of the competition.

Match preview

Barrow certainly gave a strong account of themselves in the clash at Portman Road earlier this month, particularly as they had entered that contest off the back of three straight league defeats.

Mark Cooper's side should be full of confidence heading into this contest, though, as they recorded a 2-0 victory over Swindon Town in League Two on Saturday, with Ollie Banks and Joshua Gordon both finding the back of the net from the penalty spot at the Dunes Hotel Stadium.

Saturday's success moved Barrow into 19th position in the table, with the Bluebirds picking up 22 points from their first 20 matches of the season, which has left them six points clear of the relegation zone.

Cooper's team finished 21st in League Two last term, just five points above the bottom two, and while the league is again the priority competition for the club this season, a potentially lucrative third-round FA Cup contest is within touching distance for the Cumbrian outfit.

Ipswich, meanwhile, have played twice in League One since the goalless draw with Barrow on December 4, which led to Paul Cook being relieved of his duties.

John McGreal is currently in charge of the team on a caretaker basis, and he was at the helm for the 2-0 defeat at Charlton Athletic on December 7, but the Tractor Boys managed to pick up an impressive result on Saturday, holding second-placed Wigan Athletic to a 1-1 draw.

Ipswich are currently 12th in the League One table, collecting 28 points from 22 matches, which has left them nine points off the playoff positions in England's third tier.

The Blues have previous in the FA Cup, meanwhile, famously winning the competition in 1978, beating Arsenal 1-0 in the final courtesy of a goal from Roger Osborne.

Ipswich will be hoping that a win on Wednesday could act as a springboard, although they have another tough League One clash at home to Sunderland next weekend.

Team News

Barrow boss Cooper is expected to resist the temptation to shuffle his pack from Saturday's 2-0 win over Swindon, with the hosts likely to send a strong XI onto the field.

Gordon came off the bench to score at the weekend but is unlikely to start, with Offrande Zanzala again expected to start at the tip of the attack for the League Two outfit.

Barrow have not reported any fresh injury concerns from their last match, while Josh Kay is available, having missed out against Swindon through suspension.

As for Ipswich, Cameron Burgess, Conor Chaplin and Joe Pigott all came into the starting XI against Wigan on Saturday, and the trio could retain their spots for this match.

Caretaker manager McGreal will want to avoid a second-round upset and therefore a strong team is expected, with leading goalscorer Macauley Bonne again operating in the final third of the field.

Bonne has netted 11 League One goals this term, but he is yet to find the back of the net in his two FA Cup appearances during the 2021-22 campaign.

Barrow possible starting lineup:
Farman; Jones, Ellis, Grayson; Brown, Banks, White, Brough; Stevens, Zanzala, Gotts

Ipswich Town possible starting lineup:
Walton; Vincent-Young, Edmundson, Burgess, Donacien; Chaplin, Evans, Morsy, Edwards; Bonne, Pigott

We say: Barrow 1-2 Ipswich Town

Barrow are more than capable of beating Ipswich on home soil, and all the pressure will be on the visitors; we are expecting a tight match on Wednesday but believe that the League One side will do enough to advance.
