Barcelona at risk of losing Gavi on free transfer?

:Headline: Barcelona at risk of losing Gavi on free transfer?:
Barcelona are allegedly at risk of losing midfielder Gavi on a free transfer having failed to put the necessary paperwork in place to make the youngster a senior player.

Barcelona are reportedly yet to ensure that midfielder Gavi can remain at Camp Nou past the end of the season.

Although the academy graduate remains just 18 years of age, he has already been provided with 83 appearances for Barcelona and 17 caps for Spain.

The Catalan giants naturally view the teenager as a key player for years to come, the intention being to tie Gavi down to a long-term contract.

While that is the case with Gavi being on terms until 2026, it is being claimed that the necessary paperwork is not in order with regards to his registration.

Barcelona wanted Gavi to go from a youth to senior player in the eyes of La Liga, something which would see the player's £7.1m wages included in their budget for the season.

However, La Liga ruled that they would go over that budget, while the Mercantile Court of Barcelona overturned their efforts to appeal the decision due to the necessary paperwork not being completed in time.

According to Relevo, Barcelona will appeal that decision, and they could theoretically still register Gavi at some point in the summer.

La Liga have already ruled, however, that Barcelona must first raise £177m before they can register new players, criteria which currently applies to Gavi despite him already being at the club.

As it stands, Barcelona will have to search for solutions during the next transfer window by trying to sell a number of players to raise the required funds.

If Gavi remains unregistered, there is a scenario where his contract could be annulled, allowing him to depart Barcelona as a free agent.

ESPN claims that sources feel that is unlikely to be the case, although it appears that uncertainty will remain over a complex issue for the current top-flight leaders.

Despite naturally looking to cash in on any fringe players as a first port of call, Raphinha is being touted as a potential option to raise cash.

Chelsea and Newcastle United are said to be monitoring the situation of a player who has scored the decisive goal in Barcelona's last two league fixtures. body check tags ::
