Gerard Pique admits Barcelona have been going backwards in recent years

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique hopes his side will soon be back on track as the Catalan giants prepare for a new board of directors to be elected.

Gerard Pique has acknowledged that Barcelona have been "getting worse every year" but is hopeful that the club can rescue their ailing fortunes.

Barca are gearing up for a presidential election next month after Josep Maria Bartomeu stepped down from the position ahead of an expected vote of no confidence.

The Catalan giants finished last season trophyless and have made their joint-worst start to a La Liga campaign this time around in the three-points-for-a-win era.

Pique admits that change was needed behind the scenes and hopes it will have a positive effect on results on the field.

"The club is the way it is right now," he told Movistar. "There's a process of change that was necessary. We have needed to turn things around.

"There was an obvious trend of things getting worse every year. We don't have a lot of time, but we need things to improve.

"You can't have a transitional year at Barcelona. There will be a new board and with that there will be a lot of changes in the coming months.

"I am convinced that we are going to change because the feelings are better. There are new people, young people who are making the game more dynamic.

"We need some time to gain confidence. We can only work very hard and strong. With work, I believe that the results end up coming."

Pique was on target in Wednesday's 2-1 win over Dynamo Kiev as Barcelona made it three wins from three in Champions League Group G.
