Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has praised Bernd Leno's reaction to being dropped for last weekend's 1-0 victory over Norwich City.

The Germany international has held his spot as Arsenal's first-choice goalkeeper for the past three seasons, but the arrival of Aaron Ramsdale has led to greater competition for the gloves.

After conceding nine goals in his opening three Premier League games this season, Leno made way for Ramsdale in last weekend's victory, and Arteta has affirmed that the ex-Bayer Leverkusen man has remained professional the entire time.

When asked to comment on reports that Leno reacted poorly to being dropped, Arteta told the press: "No that's not true. He was top with his teammates in training and everything. That's not true.

"Bernd was not pleased when I told him he wasn't playing. But he is a top professional and a top person. He should be disappointed and he should support his teammates like they all have with him. That's exactly what he's done."

The Gunners boss was also asked about a possible return for Jack Wilshere on a contract but was quick to dismiss any hopes of the 29-year-old pulling on the red jersey again. body check tags ::
