How Argentina could line up against Venezuela

Ahead of Argentina's Copa America quarter-final clash with Venezuela at the Maracana, Sports Mole looks at how the tournament hosts could line up.

Argentina will be aiming to maintain their impressive Copa America record against Venezuela when the two sides face off at the iconic Maracana in Friday's quarter-final.

La Albiceleste have beaten Venezuela all five times they have faced them in this competition, scoring 28 goals and conceding only three.

After a disappointing group-stage campaign, though, which saw Argentina win just one of their three matches, the pressure is on Lionel Scaloni to get things right this time around.

Ahead of the clash in Rio, Sports Mole looks at how Scaloni may set out his side.

Sergio Aguero was left out for the 1-1 draw against Paraguay in Argentina's second group outing, but he marked his return to the side with a clinical late finish in the 2-0 victory over Qatar last time out.

That should be enough to see the Manchester City striker retain his place up top, alongside fellow goalscorer Lautaro Martinez.

Aguero is the Argentina player who was involved in the most shots in the group stages of the 2019 Copa America with 13 in all.

At the other end of the field, Juan Foyth was handed a first competitive start last week and performed well.

German Pezzella is expected to return to the backline for this match, however, so versatile Foyth could shift out to the right-hand side, where he featured at times for Tottenham Hotspur last season.

In midfield, Marcos Acuna is pushing for a recall and may take over from Rodrigo de Paul as Scaloni continues to seek the right balance.
