Doctor Alex George is to host a documentary about mental health issues facing British youth for the BBC.

The 30-year-old, who first came to the public eye on Love Island, is a staunch advocate of mental health awareness and tragically lost his younger brother to suicide last year.

In February George was appointed as the government's youth mental health ambassador, a role which has seen him advise ministers on how to improve access to mental health services for young people.

In Dr Alex: Our Mental Health Crisis, George will follow the journeys of several young people who are struggling with their mental health, as well as meeting local charities and projects determined to make a difference.

"I am so proud of this film, and the stories that we have been able to tell thanks to the courage of the young people who have so bravely shared their stories," he said.

"These past 18 months have been incredibly hard, and have impacted the lives of so many children and young people, many of whom have been left feeling sad, anxious and alone, but I hope this film brings hope, and shines a light on the remarkable charities and projects across the UK that are making a difference when it is needed most."

Dr Alex: Our Mental Health Crisis will air on BBC One next month as part of this year's Children In Need appeal.
