The BBC and ITV are allegedly "battling it out" to sign up Westlife for their own one-off Christmas TV special.

The BBC and ITV are reportedly "battling" to sign up Westlife for a one-off TV special this Christmas.

The Irish boyband - Kian Egan, Shane Filan, Nicky Byrne and Mark Feehily - split up in 2012 but reunited for their 20th anniversary in 2018 and have remained together since.

The group remain one of the most successful chart acts of all time, with a record 14 of their songs debuting at number one, and boast a string of hits including 'Flying Without Wings', 'Uptown Girl', 'If I Let You Go' and 'Fool Again'.

In recent weeks the boys have been doing the TV circuit - including last night's Strictly Come Dancing - ahead of the release of their 12th studio album next month, and according to The Sun, talks are now underway about a full TV special this Christmas.

"Westlife's return to music has been a massive success," a source told the newspaper.

"Everybody knows the boys are massive ratings winners because of their huge fan base so it is no surprise that they're in demand for a Christmas special featuring all of their greatest hits.

"They've got some of the best pop songs of all time and the new music is doing amazingly well. Discussions are underway for a big TV performance.

"All the big TV shows want them but doing something of their own would be pretty special and a sure fire hit."

Last week the group released new single 'Starlight', which went straight to the top of the iTunes chart.
