Piers Morgan warns that optimism over the condition of Derek Draper - husband of GMB colleague Kate Garraway - may be "premature".

Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan has warned that colleague Kate Garraway's husband Derek Draper remains in a "very critical condition" despite waking from a coma.

In an interview with Hello! magazine over the weekend, Garraway revealed that Draper is in "a minimum state of consciousness" after spending three months in a coma due to coronavirus.

The news has made the front pages of many newspapers this morning, although representatives for the presenter released a statement to clarify his current status.

"These headlines represent a level of optimism that may not yet be justified," the statement said. "We hope, as does Kate, that there might be more evidence of a recovery but it will be a slow and very uncertain path."

Morgan added: "It's certainly premature to think at the moment that Derek is any way out of the woods, sadly. He remains in a very critical condition."

Garraway is expected to return to work on the breakfast show in the coming weeks and will appear on Wednesday morning's show for an interview with Morgan and Susanna Reid.
